Have you ever stopped during the day and said really this is my life? Today I had that moment. I had a kiddo screaming because she was hungry (disregarding the fact I told her 3 times to eat or I was going to throw it away.) 3 general education teachers were out- meaning no inclusion for my kiddos. That also means the schedule is out of wack so the behavior is off the chain as well. After lunch, one kiddo had a meltdown because of bad communication between him and the general education teacher. (Really!- How about asking the child rather than assuming something!!) Then to end the day one of my kiddos ate something that he was not suppose to and I had to call mom. It was a lot of fun.
But you know what, it is worth it when I see there face in the morning and they come to me with smiles. They know that I would never intentionally hurt them and I want what is best for each of them. I know that while there are problems now, it is just a learning curve. I gotta look at the positive in a SPE classroom or I will go crazy. Having to deal with IEPS, SLPs, AD PE, OT, PT, GE, Behavior Support and many other labels can get you bamboozled if you are not there for the children. Sometimes it is not only the children that are learning in my classroom.
1 Peter 1:7 New International Version (NIV)7 These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.
WhayIn today's classroom, we do not teach just standards there is much more to it now. We teach academics, culture, life skills and the whole student. We must be proactive and begin with the end in mind. We must have all the facts and work to assist the student to be the best he or she can be. We must use the data that we are given. We must do what is right and celebrate success when it happens. All of this matters both in the classroom and out of the classroom. The students must take the same beliefs home and follow them there. In the end, what matters is that each child excels in all areas of his or her life. What do you think is most important?
Whew, well I made it through the first week of school. I have new kiddos and some old kiddos. I am excited to be back but sometimes I wish that each child had a qr reader and it could tell you ll the information about a child. I have 1 new one that that mom and dad say something different each time that they talk to me. What do you think, would that be a good idea?
